WHY TRAIN INDOORS

Rain, snow, darkness, or just a lazy Sunday — none of them are excuses when you can train inside. Foam balls make it possible. They won't damage walls, furniture, or siblings. The Skill Stick's flexible design is perfect for tight spaces, and 15 minutes of focused indoor work beats zero minutes of outdoor practice.

CAN I REALLY PRACTICE LACROSSE INSIDE MY HOUSE?
Absolutely. A bedroom, basement, or living room provides enough space for cradling, footwork, and wall ball. The Skill Stick and foam balls are designed specifically for this.
WON'T I DAMAGE WALLS OR FURNITURE?
Not with foam balls. They're soft enough to bounce off drywall without marks, and the Skill Stick's flexible head absorbs impact. Foam balls work great for wall ball off normal walls indoors — they rebound predictably without damage.
IS INDOOR TRAINING AS EFFECTIVE AS OUTDOOR?
For stick skills and hand-eye coordination, yes. You won't build field vision or game-speed conditioning indoors, but your cradling, hand switches, and touch will improve just as fast — sometimes faster due to higher rep volume.

SETTING UP YOUR INDOOR SPACE

Your training space doesn't need to be elaborate. Here's how to set up any room for lacrosse practice.

THE SKILL STICK

The only stick purpose-built for foam balls. A regulation stick is designed for regulation lacrosse balls, so lighter foam balls don't sit or release properly. The Skill Stick's size, pocket depth, and weight are tuned for foam, tennis, and wiffle — so they feel and release like a real lacrosse ball in a real stick. Lighter and more flexible than a regulation stick, making it safer for indoor use and sharpening your feel for the ball.

FOAM BALLS ONLY

Foam or stress balls are mandatory for indoor training. They are soft enough to bounce off walls and furniture without causing damage. Stock up on foam balls.

YOUR 'WALL' — ANY WALL WORKS

FLOOR SURFACE

CRADLING DRILLS

Pure stick work — no wall required. These drills build the foundation of ball control in tight spaces.

MIRROR CRADLE

BEGINNER5 min

Stand facing a mirror (bathroom mirrors work great). Cradle the foam ball while watching your hands. Focus on keeping the ball in the pocket without looking down. The mirror gives you instant feedback on head position.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Wrist rotation, not elbow — curl the stick head toward your nose
  2. 2.Top hand guides, bottom hand supports — don't squeeze the shaft
  3. 3.Smooth figure-eight motion — no jerky movements
REPS3 sets of 1 minute each hand
KEY FOCUSEyes on your reflection, not the ball — build peripheral awareness

TV CRADLE

BEGINNER10 min

Cradle while watching TV. The distraction forces your hands to work without visual confirmation. Start with a show you've seen before — you'll drop the ball constantly at first. That's normal. Keep going.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Feel the ball settle in the pocket — trust your hands
  2. 2.Keep the stick head near your ear — don't let it drift down
  3. 3.Breathe normally — tension makes you drop more
REPSFull TV episode or 20 min session
KEY FOCUSDon't look at the stick — eyes stay on the screen, hands do the work

COUCH CRADLE SWITCH

INTERMEDIATE8 min

Walk the length of your couch cradling. At each end, switch hands before turning around. The confined space forces tight cradles, and the turns practice hand switches under mild pressure.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Slide your top hand down to meet your bottom hand during the switch
  2. 2.Keep the stick head level through the transition — no dipping
  3. 3.Switch hands before you turn — momentum carries the ball
REPS10 lengths, switching hands at each end
KEY FOCUSSmooth transitions — no stopping to switch hands

BLINDFOLD CRADLE

ADVANCED5 min

Advanced players only. Close your eyes (or use a blindfold) and cradle stationary. You have only feel — no visual feedback. You'll drop the ball dozens of times. Each drop teaches your hands something.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Listen to the ball rattle — it tells you when you're losing it
  2. 2.Micro-adjust with your fingers — fine motor control over big movements
  3. 3.Stay relaxed — white-knuckling the shaft kills feel
REPS5 min continuous, count successful 30-second streaks
KEY FOCUSFeel the ball in the pocket — develop pure tactile awareness

INDOOR WALL BALL

Foam balls work great for wall ball off any indoor wall. The soft rebound is actually gentler on your hands than outdoor wall ball, letting you get more reps with less sting.

BASIC WALL BALL

BEGINNER10 min

Stand 5 feet from any wall. Throw the foam ball against the wall, catch the rebound. The soft foam absorbs impact and returns gently — perfect for high-rep indoor sessions. Mark a target with tape for precision work.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Step to the ball on the catch — move your feet, reach with your stick
  2. 2.Give with the catch — cushion the ball into the pocket
  3. 3.Snap your top wrist on the throw — power comes from the wrist, not the arm
REPS100 reps each hand
KEY FOCUSConsistent release point — the wall doesn't lie

COUCH SEAM SHOOTING

INTERMEDIATE8 min

Aim at the seam where couch cushions meet — it's a perfect narrow target for accuracy work. The foam ball stays nearby on a miss (unlike harder balls that roll under furniture). Practice hitting the same seam repeatedly.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Eyes on the target before you shoot — pick your spot
  2. 2.Follow through toward the seam — your stick points where the ball goes
  3. 3.Step into the shot — weight transfer creates accuracy
REPS3 sets of 15 shots each hand
KEY FOCUSPrecision over power — hit the seam, not just the couch

QUICK STICK WALL BALL

INTERMEDIATE8 min

Stand close to the wall (3 feet). Rapid-fire throws and catches with minimal cradle between. The goal is catch-and-release in one motion. The soft foam rebound makes this possible indoors without ricochets.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Meet the ball with your stick — don't wait for it to come to you
  2. 2.Pull the stick back immediately on contact — the catch and throw blend together
  3. 3.Keep your hands soft — rigid hands bounce the ball out
REPS3 sets of 30 seconds continuous
KEY FOCUSMinimize time ball is in pocket — quick sticks only

OFF-HAND WALL BALL

ADVANCED10 min

Full wall ball session with your non-dominant hand only. The soft foam ball makes this less intimidating indoors — you can focus on form without worrying about hard rebounds. Your weak hand is your ceiling.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Mirror your dominant hand mechanics — same form, different side
  2. 2.Start closer to the wall — 3 feet reduces error margin
  3. 3.Celebrate small wins — every clean catch builds confidence
REPS100 reps weak hand only
KEY FOCUSDon't compensate with your body — the throw lives in the wrist

FOOTWORK & AGILITY

No stick required. These drills build the quick feet and change-of-direction that make dodges work.

CONE LADDER

INTERMEDIATE8 min

Line up 4-6 cones (or water bottles, socks, whatever) in your hallway about 2 feet apart. Weave through them: in-and-out, forward, backward, lateral. Each pass, change the pattern.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Plant the outside foot to change direction — push off, don't reach
  2. 2.Keep your hips low — power comes from leg drive
  3. 3.Arms pump opposite legs — upper and lower body work together
REPS5 passes each pattern: weave, lateral shuffle, backpedal
KEY FOCUSStay on the balls of your feet — no flat-footed movements

DODGING FURNITURE

INTERMEDIATE8 min

Use your couch, chairs, and coffee table as 'defenders.' Run at them, plant your outside foot, change direction, accelerate away. Add a stick with a foam ball once the footwork feels natural.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Approach at game speed — slow approaches don't translate
  2. 2.Drop your shoulder on the plant — sell the direction change
  3. 3.First step after the plant is everything — explode out
REPS10 reps each direction per obstacle
KEY FOCUSLow plant, explosive first step away — sell the fake with your hips

QUICK FEET BOX

BEGINNER6 min

Set 4 cones in a 3-foot square. Rapid patterns: forward-back-forward, lateral-in-lateral-out, diagonal cuts. Count reps — aim for 30 seconds of continuous movement.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Stay within the box — don't drift outside the cones
  2. 2.Light touches — your feet should barely kiss the ground
  3. 3.Keep your head up — scan the room even during the drill
REPS4 rounds of 30 seconds, rest 15 seconds between
KEY FOCUSSpeed over size — small, quick steps beat long strides

STRENGTH & STICK SKILLS

Build wrist strength and stick control through resistance and isolation work.

WRIST ROLLS

BEGINNER5 min

Hold the Skill Stick with a foam ball in the pocket. Roll your wrists through full range: palms up, palms down, side to side. Don't just cradle — roll through every wrist angle. Builds the range of motion that makes quick sticks possible.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Isolate the wrist — keep forearms still, only wrists move
  2. 2.Feel the ball weight shift — that's your feedback
  3. 3.Go slow and controlled — momentum defeats the purpose
REPS2 sets of 1 minute each hand
KEY FOCUSFull range of motion — don't rush the rolls

ONE-HAND CRADLE HOLD

INTERMEDIATE6 min

Cradle with just your top hand (no bottom hand on the stick). The increased weight leverage builds wrist and forearm strength. Switch hands every 30 seconds. You'll feel this quickly.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Choke up on the shaft — higher grip means more control
  2. 2.Use your elbow as a pivot — small arcs, not big swings
  3. 3.Engage your core — a stable base supports the stick
REPS4 rounds of 30 seconds each hand
KEY FOCUSKeep the ball controlled — don't let leverage compromise form

BOX GRIP SWITCHES

ADVANCED5 min

Hold the stick in a standard box grip. Rapidly switch between: standard grip, choked up (hands together), extended (hands apart), one-handed. 10 seconds each position, continuous cycling.

COACHING CUES
  1. 1.Slide, don't jump — smooth hand movements maintain ball control
  2. 2.Keep the stick head level during switches — no dipping
  3. 3.Anticipate the next grip — think one move ahead
REPS3 rounds of the full cycle
KEY FOCUSControl through the transitions — no fumbling

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS A FOAM BALL GOOD FOR LACROSSE TRAINING?
Yes — foam balls are excellent for indoor skill development. They develop the same hand-eye coordination and pocket feel as harder balls, with the added benefit of being safe for indoor use.
CAN I DO WALL BALL INSIDE?
Yes — foam balls work perfectly for wall ball off normal walls indoors. They rebound softly without damaging drywall or paint. The gentle return is actually easier on your hands than outdoor wall ball.
WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE MUCH SPACE?
A hallway or even a bathroom provides enough room for cradling drills and footwork. Stationary cradling needs zero floor space — just stand in place and work.
WILL INDOOR PRACTICE MESS UP MY GAME STICK SKILLS?
No — the mechanics transfer directly. Your hands don't know they're holding a Skill Stick with a foam ball. The muscle memory for cradling, catching, and hand switches is identical.
HOW DO I CONVINCE MY PARENTS/ROOMMATE THIS IS OKAY?
Show them the foam ball. Demonstrate on a soft surface. Start with cradling only (no throwing). Promise to clean up after sessions. The Skill Stick's indoor-safe design helps your case.
CAN I SHOOT INDOORS?
Yes — aim foam balls at the seam between couch cushions for a perfect target that keeps the ball nearby. You can also use pillows, mattresses, or soft furniture. Avoid hard walls and windows. The foam ball stays close on misses, making indoor shooting practical.
