WHY WALL BALL MATTERS

If you do nothing else for your lacrosse game, do wall ball. Every elite player — from NLL pros to NCAA champions — credits wall ball as the foundation of their stick skills. It's simple: throw, catch, repeat. But the repetition builds muscle memory that shows up in games when pressure is highest. With the Skill Stick and a tennis ball, any flat wall becomes your training partner — no backstop needed, no worries about damage. Once your hands are automatic, take those skills to the field — our dodge moves guide shows you how to add footwork and separation to your game.

HOW MUCH WALL BALL SHOULD I DO DAILY?
Start with 100 reps each hand (10 minutes). As you progress, work up to 300-500 reps per hand. Professional players often log 1,000+ reps daily. Quality matters more than quantity — focus on clean throws and clean catches.
WILL WALL BALL REALLY IMPROVE MY GAME?
Yes — dramatically. Wall ball improves catching, throwing accuracy, hand speed, and weak-hand confidence. The reps build muscle memory that makes stick skills automatic under pressure. Players who commit to daily wall ball see improvement within 2-3 weeks.
CAN I USE THE SKILL STICK FOR WALL BALL?
Absolutely. The Skill Stick is designed for wall ball with tennis balls. It has the same release and catch mechanics as a regulation stick, so your training transfers directly to game play. The lighter weight actually helps you feel the ball better in the pocket.

EQUIPMENT & SETUP

Wall ball requires minimal gear. Here's what you need for effective training.

THE SKILL STICK

A regulation stick is a great training tool for regulation balls, but tennis and wiffle balls don't sit or release properly in its pocket — it's designed for 5.25 oz lacrosse balls. The Skill Stick is purpose-built for lighter balls: its pocket depth and weight are tuned so tennis and wiffle balls feel and release like a real lacrosse ball in a real stick. Same authentic mechanics, designed for the balls you use at home.

TENNIS BALLS

Tennis balls rebound consistently off walls and have enough weight to feel realistic in the pocket. They're forgiving on misses and won't damage property. Keep 3-6 balls on hand so you can stay in rhythm if you drop one.

A FLAT WALL

Garage doors, brick walls, concrete walls, or interior walls all work. The surface should be flat and relatively smooth. Avoid windows, uneven stone, or surfaces with gaps. Use foam balls for interior walls to prevent damage.

TAPE (OPTIONAL)

Masking or painter's tape lets you mark targets at different heights. Mark a spot at shoulder height, one at hip height, and one high above your head for variety.

BEGINNER WALL BALL DRILLS

Start with the fundamentals. These drills build the foundation of catching, throwing, and hand positioning that everything else depends on.

DOMINANT HAND ONLY

BEGINNER5 min

Stand 5-7 feet from the wall. Throw and catch with only your dominant hand. Focus on a consistent release point and stepping to the ball on every catch. The goal is rhythm — find a cadence and stick with it.

TEACHING CUES
  • Snap your top wrist on release — the ball should jump off the pocket
  • Step toward the wall as you throw — momentum carries the ball
  • Give with your hands on the catch — cushion the ball into the pocket
REPS50 throws, dominant hand only
KEY FOCUSConsistent release point, step to the ball on every catch

WEAK HAND ONLY

BEGINNER5 min

Same as dominant hand, but exclusively with your non-dominant hand. This will feel awkward. That's the point. Weak hand development separates good players from great players. Stay patient and focus on form over speed.

TEACHING CUES
  • Start closer to the wall (4-5 feet) — reduces error margin while learning
  • Mirror your dominant hand form exactly — don't invent new mechanics
  • Celebrate every clean catch — confidence builds with repetition
REPS50 throws, weak hand only
KEY FOCUSMirror your dominant hand mechanics — same form, different side

ALTERNATING HANDS

BEGINNER5 min

Throw right, catch right. Throw left, catch left. Alternate every rep. This drill builds the transition confidence that makes you dangerous in games. The switch should happen immediately after the catch.

TEACHING CUES
  • Slide your top hand down to meet your bottom hand during the switch
  • Switch hands while the ball is in the air — be ready before the catch
  • Keep the stick head at shoulder height during transitions — no dipping
REPS50 reps each hand (100 total)
KEY FOCUSClean hand switch between every throw — no extra cradles needed

INTERMEDIATE WALL BALL DRILLS

Add complexity and game-realistic situations. These drills build the hand speed and quick release that win possessions.

QUICK STICK

INTERMEDIATE5 min

Stand 3-4 feet from the wall. Rapid-fire throws and catches with minimal cradle between. The goal is catch-and-release in one motion — the ball barely settles in your pocket before it's gone. Start slow and build speed.

TEACHING CUES
  • Meet the ball with your stick — don't wait for it to come to you
  • Pull back immediately on contact — catch and throw blend together
  • Keep hands soft — rigid hands bounce the ball out
REPS3 sets of 30 seconds each hand
KEY FOCUSMinimize time ball is in pocket — quick sticks only

TARGET PRACTICE

INTERMEDIATE8 min

Place tape marks on the wall at three heights: high (overhead), medium (shoulder), and low (knee). Hit each target 10 times with each hand before moving to the next. Focus on precision, not power.

TEACHING CUES
  • Eyes on the target before you release — pick your spot
  • Adjust your release angle, not your body — consistent footwork
  • Follow through toward the target — your stick points where the ball goes
REPS10 hits per target × 3 targets × 2 hands
KEY FOCUSAccuracy over speed — hit your spot every time

ONE-HANDED WALL BALL

INTERMEDIATE6 min

Throw and catch using only your top hand (no bottom hand on the stick). This builds wrist strength and teaches you to control the stick through your top hand. Alternate hands every 30 seconds.

TEACHING CUES
  • Choke up on the shaft for more control
  • Use your elbow as a pivot point — small controlled arcs
  • Engage your core — a stable base supports precise throws
REPS4 rounds of 30 seconds each hand
KEY FOCUSWrist control — the stick moves through your top hand

ADVANCED WALL BALL DRILLS

Game-speed reps that simulate live play pressure. These drills separate good stick skills from elite stick skills.

BEHIND-THE-BACK WALL BALL

ADVANCED6 min

Throw behind your back, catch normally. Start stationary, then add a step before the throw. Focus on rotating your hips fully — the BTB throw lives in hip rotation, not arm strength.

TEACHING CUES
  • Turn your hips fully toward the wall — the throw starts there
  • Keep the stick head near your back hip — don't let it drift out
  • Snap the top wrist on release — power comes from the wrist whip
REPS3 sets of 10 reps each hand
KEY FOCUSHip rotation generates the throw — arms just guide it

AROUND THE WORLD

ADVANCED10 min

Set up 5 positions in an arc around your wall spot: straight on, 45° left, 45° right, 90° left, 90° right. Throw 10 reps from each angle with each hand. All positions are in front of the wall — never throw from behind.

TEACHING CUES
  • Square your shoulders to the wall at each position — don't twist
  • Step toward the wall, not along the arc — attack the target
  • Use the same release mechanics from every angle — consistency wins
REPS10 reps × 5 angles × 2 hands
KEY FOCUSAdapt your release to each angle — different positions, same mechanics

WEAK HAND MARATHON

ADVANCED10 min

10 consecutive minutes of weak-hand-only wall ball. Dominant hand stays behind your back or in your pocket. When your weak hand fails (and it will), reset and keep going. This is where weak hands become weapons.

TEACHING CUES
  • Mirror dominant hand form exactly — don't invent new mechanics
  • Focus on clean catches — a dropped ball kills your rhythm
  • Breathe through mistakes — tension makes you drop more
REPSFull 10 minutes, weak hand only
KEY FOCUSPush through frustration — embrace the awkwardness

TIMED SPEED CHALLENGE

ADVANCED5 min

How many clean catches can you make in 60 seconds? Count only catches where you maintain control (no drops, no double-touches). Track your PR and beat it. This gamifies wall ball and pushes your hand speed.

TEACHING CUES
  • Find your rhythm first, then accelerate — speed comes from efficiency
  • Stay relaxed — white-knuckling the shaft slows you down
  • Compete against yourself — consistency beats one-time peaks
REPS3 rounds of 60 seconds, track best score
KEY FOCUSSpeed with control — dropped balls don't count

TROUBLESHOOTING

THE BALL KEEPS BOUNCING OUT OF MY POCKET
You're catching with rigid hands. Give with the catch — cushion the ball into the pocket by pulling your stick back slightly as the ball arrives. Think 'absorb' not 'stop.'
MY THROWS ARE INCONSISTENT
Check your release point. The ball should leave your stick at the same point every time. Also verify you're stepping toward the wall — standing flat-footed reduces accuracy.
MY WEAK HAND ISN'T IMPROVING
This is normal — weak hand development is non-linear. Commit to 10 minutes of weak-hand-only work daily for 3 weeks. Mirror your dominant hand form exactly and celebrate small wins.
THE BALL REBOUNDS TOO FAST
Move closer to the wall (3-4 feet instead of 6-7). Softer throws give you more time to react to the rebound. As you improve, gradually increase distance.
I DON'T HAVE A GOOD WALL AT HOME
Get creative. Garage doors, basement walls, brick exteriors, even interior walls with foam balls all work. The rebounder nets and pitch-backs work too — any surface that returns the ball.
HOW DO I KNOW I'M GETTING BETTER?
Track your numbers: How many clean catches in 60 seconds? How many drops per 100 throws? Your weak hand should feel less foreign after 2-3 weeks. If you're not dropping less, you're getting better.
